Since Colin’s birthday last year was a complete wash, this one had to be better. Right? Sort of. He wasn’t vomiting all day, but Maddie continued to get worse. He could eat the carrot cake I made for him, but he had to go to work for 8 hours to do it. (His office has a tradition that you provide treats for everyone on your birthday.) And to top it off, the Young Men’s snow trip got moved to the next weekend. A complete tragedy in his mind which was only compounded by his co-workers showcasing their recent ski vacation to Snowbird.
But he’s not a glass half empty kind of guy.
At least the evening provided some joy, mostly by way of food, with broiled salmon, sauteed green beans with almonds, and wild rice, followed by our contest winning Deep Dark Chocolate Cheesecake. Things were looking up.
But by the next day, Maddie’s cough progressed to the point that we began to worry, so Colin took her to the emergency room and didn’t get home until 1AM– same diagnosis, same plan of action. Bittersweet since it’s good to know that she isn’t needing constant medical attention, but sad knowing that she is still sick and there is little we can do about it.
Apparently his birthday is now synonymous with illness. Colin said that he plans to quarantine himself from Maddie for one week before the big day next year.
